World Premiere of “Hometown Reflections” with Michigan Philharmonic

On April 24, 2026, the Michigan Philharmonic will present The Sounds of the Pacific Rim at The Hawk Theatre, Farmington Hills, featuring erhu virtuoso and composer Xiao Dong Wei in the world premiere of her original work Hometown Reflections.

Event Overview

The concert blends Chinese classical musicJapanese taiko drumming, and Western orchestral traditions in a single program spanning two millennia of Pacific Basin heritage . Xiao Dong Wei, a Chinese-American erhu master and composer, will perform alongside the Michigan Philharmonic under Music Director & Conductor Nan Washburn.

  • Raion Taiko from the Great Lakes Taiko Center will perform Japanese taiko drumming, adding a visceral ancient percussion tradition to the orchestral experience .
  • The evening will include a pre-concert talk at 6:45 PM before the 7:30 PM performance .
